A Guided Study in Color Theory, Temperature, and Expressive Painting
Designed for students with a foundational understanding of oil painting, this intermediate workshop dives into the expressive and structural power of color temperature. Building on the skills from Oil Painting Part I, students will explore how subtle shifts between warm and cool tones can enhance depth, mood, and realism. Using a limited palette of Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue, participants will learn to mix, observe, and apply color temperature with intention and sensitivity.
The course begins with targeted color theory and hands-on mixing exercises, followed by a still life study that emphasizes temperature contrast. As the workshop progresses, students move into independent compositions, applying warm/cool theory to their own subject matter while receiving guidance in layering, edge control, and form modeling. By the final session, students will complete a fully realized painting and participate in a group critique focused on how temperature choices influence atmosphere and storytelling. This workshop is ideal for artists ready to expand their oil painting practice through deeper color understanding.
