Foundational Portrait Drawing in Charcoal on Toned Paper
Portraiture is an 6-session course designed to guide students through the fundamentals of drawing the human face with accuracy and expression. In the first half of the course, students will focus on portrait construction and study facial proportions, structure, and key anatomical landmarks. Through guided exercises and observational practice, students will build the skills to confidently map and shape the human head from various angles.
In the second half of the course, students will apply what they’ve learned to create a finished portrait using charcoal and chalk on toned paper. Emphasis will be placed on value, edge control, and capturing the unique presence of the subject. With personalized instruction and thoughtful critique, this course offers a strong foundation for intermediate artists looking to elevate their portrait work.
Start out with the basics: the loomis head. learn to design the head using lines and elipses. lets also get in the habit of drawing warmups.
