From Structure to Color: Foundations of the Painted Portrait
In this course, students who have completed Portrait Drawing and Oil Painting I will transition into painting the portrait with greater depth and understanding. Focusing on color theory specific to skin tones, students will learn how to construct a portrait using paint by building form, temperature, and value relationships with clarity. Early sessions will use master copies and photo references to establish strong foundational skills and a deeper sensitivity to likeness.
As the course progresses, students will develop the ability to translate drawing skills into paint with confidence and intention. Emphasis will be placed on simplifying complex information, controlling edges, and organizing color effectively. This class serves as a bridge into Alla Prima Portrait, preparing students for live, time-limited portrait sessions and a more direct, responsive painting approach.
